Smart Growth, the Western Answer to Sprawl
|
Smart Growth.org
A SERVICE OF THE SMART GROWTH NETWORK
http://www.smartgrowth.org/about/default.asp?res=1024
In communities across the nation, there is a growing concern that current development patterns -- dominated by what some call "sprawl" -- are no longer in the long-term interest of our cities, existing suburbs, small towns, rural communities, or wilderness areas. Though supportive of growth, communities are questioning the economic costs of abandoning infrastructure in the city, only to rebuild it further out.
Spurring the smart growth movement are demographic shifts, a strong environmental ethic, increased fiscal concerns, and more nuanced views of growth. The result is both a new demand and a new opportunity for smart growth.
The features that distinguish smart growth in a community vary from place to place. In general, smart growth invests time, attention, and resources in restoring community and vitality to center cities and older suburbs. New smart growth is more town-centered, is transit and pedestrian oriented, and has a greater mix of housing, commercial and retail uses. It also preserves open space and many other environmental amenities.
The Smart Growth Principles and Issues below describe in greater details the various aspects of planning and development that make up smart growth.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY WITH GLOBAL XCHANGE VOLUNTEERS
Related to country: Nigeria About this category: Learning & Education
|
The Global Xchange volunteers with support from the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and the British Council on 11th – 12th August 2008 organised a 2-day event to celebrate the International Youth Day (IYD) as well as to take action on Climate Change.
The theme of this year’s IYD was “Youth & Climate Change: Time for Action”. The event was well represented by youth drawn from the six geo-political zones of Nigeria and the Global Xchange Volunteers. The first day of the event was a sensitization forum where the youth had the opportunity to increase their knowledge on Climate Change and the causes of global warming. Mr. Taiwo Adewole a consultant from Sustainable Energy, Lagos gave a detailed presentation on “Climate Change: Youth Call to Action on Environmental Sustainability”. This session gave the participants an opportunity to a better understanding to Climate Change and Global Warming. Mr. Joe Adusei of United Nations Volunteers did a presentation on “Volunteering as a means to mitigating the impact of Climate Change”.
The day 2 of the event was an outdoor event where the youth went out to the streets and parks of Abuja to sensitise the people on Climate Change, the human contributions to Global Warming, how to recycling as well as take personal responsibility in mitigating these actions. The youth also undertook some actions by cleaning up some of these parks which had some waste littered around the environments.
After the outdoor event there was a debriefing session where the youth involved in this activities shared their experiences on the outdoor activity while out in the streets and parks of Abuja.
At the end the day 2 event, the youth were not just better informed but geared up to take personal responsibility and action towards mitigating those personal actions that also contributed to the effects of Climate Change. A communiqué was drafted and the final version will be sent to the Federal, State, Local Government, leaders and policy makers to call them to action to initiate policies and practices that will guard the citizens and bring into consciousness the need for the involvement of the citizenry to this cause as well as ensure the implementation of existing environmental policies.

Are your children being Cheated?
|
I was a straight A student and always bored in school and could not understand why the other students didn't "get it". I was always running errands and really didn't have to do anything because I was always years ahead of my class. So in the 7th grade my mom pulled me out of public school and put me in Catholic school. What a difference, it was like day and night. The things they were learning was like Greek. I had no idea what the nuns were talking about. They were learning trigonometry, calculus and I had never ever heard of it. Their writing was so much more advanced than mine, their knowledge of world history and geography was amazing, I was really in total shock. They were even learning Latin in the 7th grade.
I could not say the school was racist because there were black kids in the class and they were getting Straight A's but, my grades dropped down to C's and I could barely keep up. I couldn't understand, how the heck, I was getting straight A's and on the honor roll in the public school and now I don't understand anything. I cried a lot, I was really hurt and did not want to go to that school anymore because a mere transfer changed my life, I had went from being the smartest kid in the class to the dumbest. .
At first I was embarrassed and ashamed. I was so ashamed I became withdrawn. My mom spoke to the Nuns and they gave me individual counseling to help me. But, I still didn't get it, and I couldn't catch up. Then I became angry because, I realized that I was cheated, I was cheated out of so much knowledge that I could never make up for.
When I saw the Black children who were going to this school they were equally good and ALL of these kids were not only interested, but excited about learning. Whereas I used to be the one answering all the questions, I couldn't answer any. It was REALLY hard, because I never got the foundation they had received. That is when I realized that something was terribly wrong with America. I was child that loved to learn, I wanted to learn with all my heart, I had a thirst for knowledge, yet, I was cheated. I believe the miss - education of black America is deliberate. The system was racist. There is no doubt in my mind that it is meant to be.
The thing is, I did not know I was being cheated until I went to a different school. Similarly today, the grocery stores in black neighborhoods lack the fresh variety of healthy foods that one can find in the white neighborhoods. But then - those who have never seen the other side,. do not know they are being cheated and treated unfairly. And so the beat goes on, in every aspect of American life, to the point that we are wasting our own talent, and having to import people for their skills, from other nations because we have failed to properly educate our own.
My mom tried to compensate by getting me all kinds of books. When I went to college, I still felt I missed something. When I see my nieces getting A's and B's and their parents are so excited. Then I look at the material they are learning, and still, even in high school, their writing skills and reading skills are week, I know two things. 1) Nothing has changed. 2) Kids will learn what they are taught.

AIDS CRISIS RESPONDS TEAM IN OKENE, KOGI STATE, NIGERIA
Related to country: Nigeria About this category: Health & Wellness
|
Sometimes it involve alot to believe that such a tremedious task could be achieved by people who are not actually from you community, state, country and of the origin with you. This was my thought when these team of selfless people from Canada called AIDS CRISIS RESAPONDS TEAM, arrived my Community (Okene, Kogi State Nigeria). This people were great and outstanding, not like some i have meet before. the team from Canada are: Donna King, Lizzy Walker, Terry Sebastian and Donna Cross. Between 11th to 16th of July, 2008 this people with our volunteer team embark on a charity excersise which involves HIV/AIDS campaign, testing people for free and giving drugs, supplements and vitamins to the needy. We visited the poor and downtroden providing them with little support in the form of cloths, toys, small amount of money.
We visited Orphanages and widows who were in need of assistance and materials for survival, all these were given to them.
This is the kind of efforts we want to see people do, and not for people who do not believe in helping people yet their songs are been sang. I am happy to be part of this great effort and i hope more people like these will keep comming to Africa from more charities and NGOs.
Other people involved are: Idris Abdul Rahman, Farouq Mazai, Abdul G, Yunusa, Ohunene Sule, Muhammed Ogirima, Mariam Yusuf (Oremeyi), Marhia, Danjuma Muhammed, Usman Aliyu, Kabir, Memunat Mukhtar and Musa of EbiraOpete TV communications.
And to the Ebiraview Team which are: Idris Abdul Rahman, Usman Aliyu, Maryam Yusuf (Oremeyi), Muhammed Danjuma(Me) and Kabir Ismail, you have done a great JOB.

A Tale of Two Cities: The Asphalt and the Favela
Related to country: Brazil About this category: Culture & Identity
|
“The first favela came from the head of a pig. In 1898, the Rio de Janeiro city government decided to demolish a tenement called Cabeça do Porco (Pig’s Head) that housed over one thousand people in the center of city. One quarter of the city’s population at that time lived in tenements- and the Pig’s Head tenement represented the unclean and unwanted. The dislocated residents, mostly dock workers, occupied a nearby hill and built new homes from the rubble of the old. The first favela - Morro da Providência - like those that would follow, was the result of a serious shortage of affordable housing for low-income workers—and the government’s unwillingness or incapacity to provide that housing.
Since Morro da Providência, hundreds of favelas have formed across the hills of Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations Center for Human Settlements (Habitat) estimates that between 30 and 40 percent of Rio de Janeiro’s population of thirteen million lives in favelas - illegal land occupations. In the 1950’s, the number of favelas increased dramatically, when poor families from the North and Northeast migrated to Rio de Janeiro in search of better opportunities and access to education, health care services, etc.
These migrants arrived to find poor living conditions in most favelas - no running water, sewage, electricity, or telephones. Gradually, through various community organizations led by activists, the favelas improved. While long established favelas in the Zona Sul and Zona Norte have relatively good access to basic urban services, an explosion of new favelas in the Zona Oeste (where the population living in favelas is growing at the rate of 400% per year) have raw sewage in the streets and no running water or electricity.
Currently about 12% of households in Rio de Janeiro do not have running water, over 30% do not have sewage connections, and official electricity connections reach only 70% of the population. In favelas - which make up the bulk of the households without these urban services - residents use illegal connections (gatos) to water and electricity, and sewage is often dumped straight into rivers, drainage ditchs, and lagoons.
Favela Faces is a bilingual web site that uses photographs and short video interviews to tell the stories behind the faces of four people (Tio Souza, Tiana, Zé Cabo, and Paulinho) living in or around the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Their stories relate the problems facing favela residents, the ways in which they are working to overcome them, and how they have and continue to improve their communities with the limited resources available to them.

You can teach a Young person how to speak in front of crowds on any topic, but a Leader is one who knows how to solve problems.
Constitutional Governments exist to provide for basic needs as entitlements that assure self sustainable KID SAFE Self Reinforcing Native Indigenous Ancestral Communities of Well Being.
Leaders that want to be acknowledged aren't focused on solving problems & most often distract those who are otherwise employed to solve problems.
This type of Leader is called many names, most of those sound like Egoist or Populist. They go about trying to gain attention in any Community while expressly trying to diminish the stature those established Community Leaders.
Native Indigenous Ancestral Leadership acknowledges Community Leadership, shows respect to those in the Community or Organization with Seniority & makes sure to enhance the importance of Community Leaders already in place rather than position or posture as a better leader.
